The musical “Singin’ in the Rain” is the stage version of one of the most popular musical films. The comedy, shot in 1952, is a movie classic owing both to the unforgettable Gene Kelly and also the excellent swing music and great hits (beside the legendary eponymous number, these include Beautiful Girl, You Are My Lucky Star and many others). The story takes place in the 20’s Hollywood era and it is a critique of the industry’s period of transformation from silent movies to sound. The main character, Don Lockwood, is a popular star, a well-known celebrity and ladies’ darling. Young, handsome, energetic and rich – a Hollywood star. His screen partner is the beautiful and sexy star Lina Lamont, against whose rapacity he gently defends himself while bestowing his feelings on modest, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, who dreams about a career in theatre. Don’s good friend Cosmo Brown – musically talented and cheerful – is his reliable buddy and coworker. We track the destinies of this foursome on the film set. The events are accompanied by the rivalry between the ladies as well as the love affair between the star and the debutante. For over half a century audiences have loved the humour in “Singin’ in the Rain” – the characters’ adventures on and off the film set. And of course the eponymous song performed in the pouring rain!
ROMA Musical Theatre has once again presented its very own staging of a musical (non-replica). This cheerful and colourful production filled with dance will also be… wet!
