The musical ‘Pilots’ is a must-see for all lovers of musicals and those who look to the theatre for wonderful voices, great dancers and entertainment at the highest level.

The musical productions of the Roma artistic director are flying high and so is the latest, highly anticipated premiere of ‘Pilots’.

This moving story about the actions of Polish pilots during World War II, as well as the love story between Nina and Janek, is set to a beautiful musical score composed by Jakub Lubowicz and Dawid Lubowicz. […] Another element that deserves attention and recognition is the stage movement, which in ‘Pilots’ is impeccable, precise and rehearsed to perfection.

A dynamic spectacle, especially stunning in the group scenes. The set design, costumes, special effects, dancing and singing all impressively complemented and harmonised with each other.

The lyrics were written by Michał Wojnarowski, who impressively overcame the age-old problem connected with the Polish language, namely, the lack of single-syllable words for rhymes in the masculine gender, and masterly applied a wide range of poetic devices.

A tremendous achievement by Wojciech Kępczyński.

A musical spectacle on a world-class level […] with fantastic music, a superb cast and spectacular special effects.

A top-quality musical story, in which the dramatic fates of individuals are intertwined with the equally dramatic history of wartime Europe. The show triumphed on the stage of Warsaw’s ROMA Theatre from 2017 to 2019 thanks to its attention-grabbing subject matter (the pilots of 303 Squadron), fast-paced story, terrific computer effects and catchy songs, together with a large dose of humour and emotion.

Wojciech Kępczyński shows that he is not only a skilled theatre manager and seasoned musical director, but also that he knows how to write a well-crafted musical with many settings for the action, an interesting story and full-blooded characters. The musical ‘Pilots’ is constantly changing the place where the action is set, and with 500 superb costumes designed by Dorota Kołodyńska, great attention to detail on the pilots’ uniforms and LED screens displaying the scenery, this allows several plans of action to be created. The audience can also watch breathtaking scenes of air battles on the screens.

The staging of the performance in the Roma Theatre was on a par with world standards and Broadway conventions.

‘Pilots’ at the Roma Musical Theatre is a triumph. Fire on the stage and golden vocals. […] At the helm of the theatre since 1998, Wojciech Kępczyński is no ordinary cultural manager, artistic director or stage director. He is a visionary whose passion for musical theatre has evolved into creating the most important musical stage in Poland today. […] ‘Pilots’, conceived and directed by Wojciech Kępczyński, is a triumph of Polish musical theatre. Using his rich experience and passion, the director of the Roma Theatre has created a modern show that, at the same time, tells a story that is attractive but not kitschy. He offers Polish audiences a theatre production at the highest level, one that provides positive emotions and stimulates people to learn about the history of Polish heroes, while at the same time avoiding politics. Finally, he has proved that he’s not only able to stage hits from London or New York in our country, but that he can also create a Polish musical on a world-class level.

A beautiful tribute to the Polish Squadrons, where top-quality digital sets intertwine with magnificent voices. […] The digital set design of Hitler’s attack on Poland is a masterpiece, matched only by the incredible scene in the headquarters with Churchill and Göring. But first and foremost, ‘Pilots’ is a beautiful tribute to the Polish Squadrons that fought in the UK. The most touching moment in the show is when the actors, after taking their bows, and the audience applaud together the Polish pilots shown in the old photographs that wallpaper the stage, and the present merges with the past. Never before has it felt so close to me.

The variation of the scenes in ‘Pilots’ is perfect, and the show is of a highly professional technical level. […] Wojciech Kępczyński is well-acquainted with the rules governing contemporary musicals, and his ‘Pilots’ is an attempt to combine Polishness with world trends. These trends actually dominate in ‘Pilots’, although it does also have a great story to it. […] Roma offers a show with an aesthetic that is completely different from the one that is currently applied on our theatre stages. You can reject ‘Pilots’, or accept it in the same way that we accept the rules of the musical. In ‘Pilots’, everything happens in line with those rules.
Jacek Marczyński, teatr-pismo.pl
ROMA has been dictating the level of musical productions in Poland for years. With ‘Pilots’, we have wonderful voices, a great orchestra and ‘fireworks’ with the stage design. […] Poles are not geese, they have a musical of their own.

The Roma Theatre and a musical of the highest level. […] The show is an incredible audiovisual spectacle. A beautiful love story and, at the same time, a tribute to our heroes. The precisely prepared scenery makes a phenomenal impression during the performance, becoming the main medium through which the plot unfolds. […] I am full of admiration for the director, Wojciech Kępczyński, who decided to evoke the Europe of that time in such a precise way. Bravo!

Wojciech Kępczyński knows the recipe for a hit musical: a great love story and the latest technology, a patriotic mood and fast action.
